I'm guilty for not investing.

map to heart
I have been with my company for 4.5 years and have never set up my 401K. I didn't plan on being here this long, to be honest. Ugh, I could kick myself. My company matches up to something like 6% of what I put in. It's free money. And as soon as I've been here 5 years, I will be fully vested. That means that if/when I leave the company, I get to keep all the money that they matched! Although for me that will be nothing because I haven't taken advantage of it at all. Investing totally scares me, but I know that it's good and it's probably the only way we'll ever be able to retire.

I really like the idea of this real estate trust deed. I especially like the sentence that says they "produce a high margin of return with a low margin of risk." High return/low risk - that's my kind of investing. And a 12% return seems reasonable to me. Of course, it's going to be 98 billion years before I have 25K to invest, which is their minimum amount.

YIKES! I hope you are busy setting up your 401k right now!!!! Just put in 6% (or whatever they match) really, go do it right now. It won't even make that much of a difference in your take home pay since it's pre-tax. Ask you HR person for help on how to allocate money if you're not sure - they usually have some kind of table to use - like if you're in your 20's do this, 30's do this, etc, etc.

My mom gave us Suze Orman's book - something about being Young, Fabulous, and Broke and it has really good information on all sorts of investing stuff - I recommend it - Erik used her advice to set up his 401k.

I know. I really need to. I can't tell you how many times in the last 4 years I have thought, "I really need to set up my 401K." But there's always something that keeps me from it. I was going to do it a few weeks ago and then I got scared because now I have to start paying for health insurance, and money is going to be so tight ...

I'll put that book on my list.

I'll also recommend that book, and even provide you with a direct link: The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous & Broke. :)

i also recommend suze ornman. she's easy to read and helpful to boot. my 401K is automatic, and i'm glad for it. i'd hate to be in the situation you're in. i actually called them this afternoon to get some stuff sorted out from my last job. i didn't think it was inspired by this ppp (which i did yesterday,) but maybe it was subconcious or something.
